On May 22, Astellas marked the inaugural Legal Community Advocacy, Representation and Service (CARES) Day, where employees from the Legal and Intellectual Property (IP) department around the world dedicated a day to volunteering in the communities where they live and work.

This activity complements the company’s Changing Tomrrow Day, Astellas’ global day of service. The Legal CARES initiative began in January 2017, offering Astellas Legal employees the opportunity to provide charitable service work and pro bono legal services to those who need it most.

Throughout the fall and winter, Astellas sponsored a total of 62 Changing Tomorrow Day volunteer events for field-based employees across the United States to unite and support families staying at Ronald McDonald Houses (RMH) to be near their hospitalized children. Many of the volunteers cooked meals from scratch to provide comfort and nutrition to the patients’ families, while other teams helped clean the houses to meet the needs of each RMH chapter.

Nine Astellas volunteers from the PCP/Specialty team helped to restore a home in Tyler, Texas. The team worked with PATH (People Attempting to Help) to support the organization’s Transitional Housing Program—designed to provide safe, decent and affordable housing to low-to-moderate income families in East Texas.

“PATH acquired a rental house, and it was in need of some TLC—this is where we came in to help,” said Matt Mercer, regional sales manager, PCP/Specialty, West.
